TAITO Corporation made a splash a few days ago when they released Bust-A-Move Journey, a premium-priced puzzle game that echoes the style and charm of the Bust-A-Move franchise perfectly.
Bust-A-Move Journey is a match-three style game that boasts hundreds of levels of bubble-popping fun, wherein you complete different kinds of “targets” — saving “Chack’n” (small, cute little creatures trapped in the bubbles), reaching a specific score, or a myriad of other things.
In an age of “freemium” games that might try to nickel and dime you, the only additional expense that Bust-A-Move provides for purchase are more maps. The base game boasts up to 270 different stages, and each map, costing $0.99 a piece, has around 89 new stages.
There is in-game currency, but it is abundant — and there is no option to buy more. The game doesn’t pressure you into buying up every power-up available in order to successfully beat a stage, and that’s incredibly refreshing.
As a long-time fan of Bust-A-Move games, this iteration satisfies my itch to pop bubbles with adorable dinosaurs, accompanied by catchy music that you’ll find yourself humming throughout the day. Perhaps my only criticism of the game is that there are some load times throughout it, but they are few and far between — not nearly enough to make the game unenjoyable or break any sort of immersion that the player may experience.
If you are a fan of the Bust-A-Move franchise, or just a fan of match-three style puzzle games in general, this game will be a hit. You can pick it up on Google Play for $4.99.
