Every day in December, we here at Destination Android are celebrating the best games released in 2017, starting with No. 31 on the first with a new ranking each day all the way to the end of the year with our first ever Game of the Year award.
DATA WING from Dan Vogt is a racing game that boasts, surprisingly, some of the best writing we’ve seen in a game this year. The level-based racing gameplay is excellent on its own, but the dialogue, provided by the rather snarky AI (or is it?) “Mother,” takes it to another level.
Add to that a rad retro-futuristic coat of paint and a banger of a soundtrack and you’ve got something special. The gameplay has you controlling a vehicle that is basically just a triangle, steering left and right from a top-down perspective. It’s all about making it to the end of each track, and a pretty fun boosting mechanic that utilizes near-misses with the track walls makes this both challenging and rewarding.
But it’s really the story that shines here. Google Play is full of minimalistic arcade games featuring gameplay that looks fairly similar to DATA WING, but the writing is what separates it from the rest. The gameplay on its own would result in a good game, but the entire package together makes for a great game.
On top of all of that: the game is free with no ads and no in-app purchases. It’s just a fantastic game put out by a developer who knows what he’s doing. The game is a delight in every aspect, and our No. 28 Android game of 2017.
