Capcom has announced that they will be making a new Puzzle Fighter game, and this one is coming to mobile platforms. The original, confusingly called Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo, is a spin-off of Super Street Fighter II Turbo that was released in 1996 and has seen arcade, Playstation, PSN and XBLA releases in its lifetime.

Puzzle Fighter is a puzzle game where the player controls blocks that drop into a playfield. But rather than just matching three gems, they can only be destroyed by coming into contact with a crash gem, which eliminates all gems of that color it comes into contact with on any side.

The competitive aspect comes from dumping garbage blocks on the opponent by creating combos, same as most competitive puzzler games. Those blocks have a timer and can’t be cleared until that timer runs out.

And, more importantly, deformed chibi versions of Street Fighter characters mock battle in the center of the screen depending on how the actual puzzle game is going. The original was well-balanced, incredibly fun and even though this new iteration will be a free-to-play game, I’m pretty excited to see the franchise come to mobile. I spent an awful lot of time playing the Playstation version with my friends growing up.

The game will be playable at PAX West this weekend and you can peep the reveal teaser below.

Puzzle Fighter Mobile is “coming soon” to iOS and Android.
